Will Prince William and Kate Middleton Get Engaged Soon?

by Maricar on November 21st, 2006

Woolworths souvenir 2

Speculation has been rife about whether or not dashing Prince William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton will become engaged soon. Ever since the couple, or particularly bikini-clad Kate, was seen vacationing in Ibiza earlier this year, bookies (aka gambling firms) have lowered the odds that the royal engagement will happen by the end of the year. Woolworths, a British retailer, has even jumped the gun and is preparing a set of commemorative items “just in case”.

Of course, we won’t be getting any comment from the royal establishment about whether or not these speculations have any meat on them. So royal watchers are left waiting…. And, in my humble opinion, that’s probably what we’ll have to do for a long while.

Yes, I don’t think we’ll see an engagement between Wills and Kate soon. At least, not within the year. And probably not even next year.

Why? Here are my reasons:

1. They’re young. Both are 24 years old. From the look of things, they’re both enjoying their status in life. Besides, Prince William has been known to say that he has no plans of getting married until he’s at least 28.

2. They still have much to do as an unmarried young man and woman. Prince William is just about to finish his training in Sandhurst, and is mostly likely to face an increasing array of royal responsibilities designated to him by The Queen. Kate has been the subject of talk regarding her lack of employment, and IMO is still trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life. She tried to launch a clothing line, and given the opportunity, might still be interested in pursuing such a career.

3. There is no real reason for them to get married sooner rather than later. The British royal family has one king-in-waiting in Prince Charles, and there is no pressing need for anyone to produce the next heir after William.

4. Prince William doesn’t seem the type to recklessly plunge into marriage, regardless of how much he loves Kate. He looks level-headed enough (and stubborn, from what I’ve read) to take matters into his own hands at his own time.

5. Here’s a quote from The Royalist, regarding the couple’s reaction to the Woolworths souvenirs:

…the couple are said to have been highly amused by the recent publicity surrounding Woolworths’ plans for a range of royal wedding commemoratives, an insider saying: “Kate and William have had hysterics over the wedding china story and they find it a great source of amusement that everyone is talking about it.”

6. And, finally, one from the Telegraph:

A friend of Wills’s 24-year-old girlfriend informs Mandrake that the couple, who have been together since they met at St Andrews University, will not be getting married in the near future.

“There will be no wedding next year,” her chum asserts confidently. “Kate does not want to get married until she feels ready to have children and she is in no rush. She is acutely aware of the positions of Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, who both felt under huge pressure to have babies as soon as they married. Kate and William are very happy as they are.”

So, there. I do hope that Wills and Kate prove to be right for each other and eventually tie the knot. But meanwhile I’m settling down for a long period of royal-watching. If I’m proven wrong, I’ll be as happy as anyone and will be sure to follow the engagement story here at Merry Royals.

How about you? Do you believe an engagement between Prince William and Kate is imminent?

When Charles and Diana were engaged, she was forced to undergo medical tests to prove she was a virgin and able to bear children. Seems like Kate doesn’t qualify in one area if she’s to marry the future King of England.

[…] Prince William, who’s been in training in Sandhurst, got a taste of anonymity. There have been reports of a plan for him to slowly become the public face of the monarchy in the next few years. There are speculations that his romance with Kate Middleton will lead to an engagement soon. Even Woolworths has joined the bandwagon and has readied souvenirs for the Royal Engagement, just in case. Meanwhile, Kate goes about her everyday life, shopping with her mum, throwing out the trash and flying to South Africa to celebrate a friend’s birthday. […]

[…] Though I did say before that I don’t think the lovely pair will get engaged anytime soon, a Christmas Day announcement from The Queen would be so romantic. I’ll be quite happy to eat my words, if that happens. I’m getting the alphabet soup ready. […]

[…] I wrote in this blog last year, and I do still think, that an engagement between Prince William and Kate Middleton won’t be happening this year. Even the Daily Mail, which is one of the papers that fed the engagement speculation, now calls it “the engagement that never was“. The article cites the following reasons that the two won’t be marrying soon: […]

No wedding anytime soon, no need for it. But William and Kate just reunited (if they ever really broke up) so there are strong feelings apparently. But since Charles is in-waiting for the crown, and William after him there is NO rush for this marriage to take place. These two will enjoy each other for a long time to come and let the chips fall where they may.

There can be no King if William will marry a commmoner, like Charles! If he will marry Kate, then Harry should sacrifice, otherwise , London will no longer have King only Prince!Well, obviously none of the heirs want the situation to happen, but Chelsy is a promising Princess!Goodbye Kate, your like a lost puppy, find yourself & have peace!

I do believe Charles will become King someday. It would be shock if Queen Elizabeth bypasses him, and makes William King instead.

Why do you think Chelsy will make a better Princess than Kate, Amy?

Although I’m not Amy, I can tell you that theres no competition here. They both will make good princesses. The line of succession will go as planned. Only unless Charles becomes very ill when The Queen dies, then William will step in Charles’s place. But since The Queen is fine, I think we won’t see a coronation for a long time.
